Design Director

Sub Rosa, a strategy-led experience design practice, is seeking a talented Design Director to join our growing team. The Design Director (“DD”) is the manager and leader of the creative process within Sub Rosa and directly reports to the General Manager. The DD provides thought leadership and operational excellence in developing concepts and big ideas that map against client briefs. The DD’s primary responsibilities are (a) Oversee the creative output and generate original concepts/brand engagement opportunities for clients; (b) Design and develop the creative process within the Studio, developing tools and best practices to facilitate the growth of original ideas; (c) Manage and mentor the Design team to enhance and grow skills and creative proficiency within the Studio.

Responsibilities: Creativity
  • Manage, review, and oversee the creative output of the Studio
  • Lead the creative process and generate original concepts and brand engagement opportunities for clients against set creative briefs
  • Lead and drive concept creation in client pitches and business development, including the development of the proposal and sell through of ideas via in person presentations
  • Work with strategist/producers and/or clients to present creative materials and garner feedback
  • Demonstrate problem-solving ability and good judgment
  • Analyze, ascertain and foster relationships with existing clients and brands in order to assess and cultivate organic growth opportunities.
Responsibilities: Process
  • Design and develop the process within the Studio to grow and stimulate creativity and creative output. Specifically, integrate Design and Strategy practices into a singular and unified creative culture focused on output
  • Manage the efficient and effective resource mapping and workflow planning for the department
  • Develop tools and best practices to facilitate creativity
  • Stay atop trends and industry best practices to bridge insights, strategy, and creativity into one output
  • Continuously propose ways to streamline and refine the creative process
  • Grow and mature the existing Sub Rosa brand ecosystem and code (integrating Applied Empathy), with a shift from theory to action
  • Build knowledge bases and additional competencies (ie. Creative technology innovations, motion graphics, and post-production)
Responsibilities: Mentorship & Management
  • Manage, mentor and support the Design team to enhance and grow skills and creative proficiency within the Studio
  • Develop and build comprehensive individual growth plans for each member of the Design team
  • Foster an environment of ideation, collaboration, and creativity
  • Share, teach, evolve and reinforce the application of best creative practices across the organization, and instill and reinforce company values.
  • Instill a culture and series of measures within the department to focus and prioritize profitability
  • Prepare and present regular status updates of all applicable projects for review with General Manager
Responsibilities: Leadership
  • Lead, guide and inspire the Design Department
  • Interface, collaborate and instill confidence in the department and Leads
  • Lead and drive all internal Design Department meetings
  • Active and positive participation in all departmental level meetings and requirements
  • Perform and act as a leader and senior member of the organization, commanding the respect and trust of colleagues
  • Deliver thought leadership on the topic of creativity
  • Elevate the department as a leader in creative community
  • Oversee and drive the recruitment process, inclusive of review of resumes, conducting interviews and providing recommendations to Senior Management on hiring decisions


  • 7-10 years of agency, media, or other relevant creative and brand management experience
  • Must have 3-dimensional design experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of building, managing, sourcing, mentoring and inspiring creative teams
  • Bachelor’s Diploma/Degree in Graphic/Visual/Communication Design
  • Excellent command of the Apple Mac platform, utilizing the following applications: Adobe CS Suite, Microsoft Office
  • Ability to provide clear direction to the creative team and see that it is executed
  • 5 years experience on client pitches and developing and fostering client relationships
  • Superior written communication and verbal/presentation skills
